We have been making music for over 40 years. We are a lively, friendly group of singers, performing at the highest level in Central and East London venues.
The choir is based in Stratford at the University of East London and draws members from the University and the wider community in Docklands, East London and beyond.
We usually give four concerts every year in East and Central London. In addition we are regularly engaged to sing at weddings, carol concerts and corporate events.
We tour regularly in the UK and Europe to destinations such as Prague, Italy, France and Denmark. In our 2016 tour we gave concerts in Douvres-la-Délivrande, Caen and Bayeux. Our theme was “L’anneé en musique” (“A Journey through the Church Year”) and included music from 17th Century to the present day. In 2015 oour UK Coast to Coast tour included concerts in York Minster and Liverpool Cathedral.
Being a member of the choir means being part of a professional but lively and very friendly group of amateur singers. We come from all walks of life and have a range of singing experiences, but we all share one thing – a passion for singing.
- to inspire amateur singers to perform choral works to the highest standards
- to bring choral music to a wider audience at affordable prices
- to encourage young singers to experience the enjoyment of choral singing
- to keep the tradition and art of choral singing alive for future generations
The choir sings a varied and challenging repertoire. Our concerts include a variety of secular and sacred music from Brahms and Britten through Mozart to Bernstein and Shearing.
Our repertoire is drawn primarily from Western classical choral music. However, we like to experiment and also include lighter or more unusual works in each season’s programming. In the past we have also commissioned and performed works by Judith Bingham and Robert Walker and have performed works by Paul Patterson and Brian Chapple in the presence of the composers.
Concerts range from large works performed with professional orchestra and soloists to unaccompanied works and soloists drawn from the Chorus.
Founded in 1972 as an evening class at the Polytechnic of North East London (now the University of East London), East London Chorus maintains strong links with the University which provides us with a rehearsal venue at its Stratford campus.
We are a UK registered charity, No 276517 and are currently supporting Haven House Children’s Hospice.
